NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Athletics is mourning the passing of former men's golf All-American Geoff Knowles.

Knowles, who lettered for the Matador men's golf team from 1974-77, passed away on September 25 at the age of 68.

A local product from Agoura High School, Knowles began his Matador career in 1974 as a member of head coach Bill Cullum's NCAA Division II National Championship team. He earned honorable mention All-America accolades as both a freshman (1974) and as a sophomore in 1975.

Joined by fellow All-Americans, Dan Pouliot and Keith Lyford, the Matadors won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship in 1974, the fifth consecutive conference crown for the Matadors who would go on to win eight straight CCAA titles under Cullum.

"I was at Valley College when I met Geoff and we became friends and stayed that way for almost 50 years," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "He was a great contributor to the program as a student-athlete and was great friend and contributor to our program for many years after."

Knowles was instrumental in helping launch the professional careers of several former Matadors including Felix Mory who is currently playing on the European Challenge Tour.

"Geoff supported many of my former players who were launching professional careers," added Bracken. "He was one of the most giving people I've ever met. We still talked each and every week and he will be sorely missed by me personally and by our program and CSUN as well."

A 1978 graduate of CSUN, Knowles earned his bachelor's degree in accounting/marketing. He was an original member of the organizing committee for the Ben Graham Memorial Tournament which has raised funds for the CSUN men's golf program for the past 36 years. For many years he worked at Schwarzkopf & Dep, Inc. where he was the Director of Financial Administration.

Knowles is survived by his wife of 27 years, Juliet.
