Matador Student-Athletes of the Week - Feb. 28
Each week during the 2022-23 season, GoMatadors.com selects two Matadors as Student-Athletes of the Week. This week, we highlight Water Polo's Meghan Lopez and Men's Volleyball's Jano Tello for their individual performances in the pool and on the court.
Meghan Lopez, Water Polo
Goalkeeper Meghan Lopez helped CSUN post a pair of wins at the Redlands Invitational on Saturday.
Dealing with snowy conditions throughout the two matches, Lopez recorded a combined 27 saves on the day while playing all 64 minutes in front of the cage. She posted a career-high 19 saves in a 13-5 win over Westcliff. Her 19 saves are tied for the fifth-most recorded in a single game in team history. Lopez has 122 saves to go with a 7.57 GAA this season.
Jano Tello, Men's Volleyball
Junior middle blocker Jano Tello helped the 14th-ranked Matadors to a pair of wins last week over Westcliff and UC San Diego as CSUN extended its current win streak to seven straight.
In earning CSUN's second Big West Player of the Week honors in 2023, Tello opened the week with a bang, knocking down a career-high 10 kills on 10 errorless swings sets a single-match CSUN record for hitting percentage (1.000). Tello edged four Matadors who held the record at .929. Daniel Wetter's 13 kills on 14 swings in 2021 was the latest to reach the mark. Tello also added one ace and three blocks for CSUN in the win. Tello then five kills and one error on eight attacks, to go with two blocks and one assist as CSUN topped UC San Diego in four sets in its 2023 Big West opener in La Jolla. For the week, the junior from Chula Vista played in seven sets while putting down 15 kills on 18 swings to hit .778 while averaging 2.14 kills per set. He also added one ace and five blocks in the two matches.
