- Oct 911:00 AMKeynote Speaker: Erica Alfaro, “Succeed Despite Adversity”Erica Alfaro is a CSU alumna, an award-winning author, educational advocate and the proud daughter of migrant farmworkers. In 2019, Erica’s graduation picture, where she is standing in a strawberry field with her farmworker parents, became the first graduation picture to go viral and made headlines worldwide. Erica will be presenting an hour-long keynote presentation on three lessons that led to her success despite adversity. She will also be giving away copies of her book, Harvesting Dreams, and having a brief Q&A. UCS will be providing light refreshments from Porto’s for attendees as well. Discuss issues of difference, conflict, and community within the Latinx culture to facilitate understanding between social/cultural groups. Student participation in semi-structured face-to-face dialogues with students from other social identity groups to learn from each others’ narratives and perspectives. Exploration of ways of taking action beyond Latinx misconceptions to create change and bridge differences at interpersonal and social/community levels.
- Oct 104:30 PMSabor y Ritmo: A Celebration of Latino/a/x Heritage MonthCelebrate Raza Heritage Month: Celebrating Nuestra Gente y Comunidad with Latino dance and music. Learn about the history of traditional Latino dance and music styles including salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, & ballet folklórico. Guest speaker, Dr. Steven Osuna, professor from California State University, Long Beach, will discuss the cultural and historical significance of the various Latino dance styles that represent the diverse cultures of Latin America. Performances by Salsa Libre, Ballet Folklórico Aztlán de CSUN will demonstrate their unique dance styles. Join us for a special baile, Latin dancing open for all to enjoy the sabor y ritmo of Latino music!

- Oct 117:30 PMGuest Artist Lecture/Recital: Dr. Jaramillo, Piano SpheresRhythms of Latin America A Lecture/Recital with Dr. Andrés Jaramillo October 11 at 7:30 pm, Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall No Admission Fee Co-sponsored by Piano Spheres and The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Dr. Andrés Jaramillo serves as faculty at the Collinsworth School of Music at California Baptist University where he teaches Applied Piano, Chamber Music, Music Theory, Senior Recital Class, Musicianship, and Music in Global Cultures. Aside from teaching, Dr. Jaramillo keeps an exciting and active career as a solo and collaborative pianist, clinician and conductor. He has performed internationally in such countries as South America, South Africa, Spain, and China as well as throughout the United States. His programs typically feature standard classical piano repertory combined with Contemporary and Latin-American music. He often premieres international and local composers’ works. Dr. Jaramillo earned his DMA degree in Piano Performance with minor fields in Theory, Instrumental Conducting, and Keyboard Collaborative Arts from USC Thornton School of Music under the mentorship of prestigious pianist and teachers, Daniel Pollack, Dr. Alan Smith and Prof. Larry Livingstone. He obtained his Master’s Degree from the EWU and his undergrad studies at the Juan N. Corpas University under the mentorship of Maestro Jorge Zorro Sanchez and teachers Pilar Leyva and Ludmila Weber. They expand the piano repertoire by commissioning new music and sustaining several concert series of the highest artistic quality which focus primarily on music by living American composers. Their Leonard Stein Artist Residency is a performance and teaching program dedicated to locating, supporting and presenting pianists from historically underrepresented groups who specialize in the performance of new music.
