CSUN Leads CSU in Sustainability in AASHE STARS Index

Ranked first in the CSU by AASHE’s STARS rating, California State University, Northridge leads the system in sustainability. In the 2025 AASHE Sustainable Campus Index, released in September, CSUN earned a Gold STARS rating, ranks No. 1 among Master’s Institutions for Buildings and Grounds and places No. 4 overall among Master’s Institutions globally.
The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a program of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, is a widely used rating system that measures sustainability efforts in academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration. AASHE assigns an overall bronze, silver, gold or platinum rating based on points in each category. This year’s Gold STARS rating also includes tying for No. 6 in the Top Performers in the Research category.
“CSUN’s Gold rating of 80.73 places us at the top of the CSU system, and our No. 1 ranking in the Buildings and Grounds category further demonstrates our long-standing sustainability leadership, a true testament to the collaborative efforts of our entire campus community,” Austin Eriksson, director of Energy, Sustainability and Strategic Initiatives in CSUN Facilities Planning, Design and Construction, said.
Matadors past, present and future can take pride in a university that turns sustainability ambition into measurable impact.
