Planning a vacation is exciting until the costs start piling up. One of the biggest (and most overlooked) expenses is your rental car. But with a few clever tricks, you can enjoy the freedom of the road without paying more than you need to. Here are seven rental tips that can help you save money and still get a smooth, stress-free experience.

1. Use Local Holiday Calendars to Your Advantage

Rental prices often go up during national or regional holidays but not always everywhere. Before you book, check the public holidays in the area you’re visiting. Even nearby towns might have different rates depending on local demand. A slight change in pickup location or date can sometimes lead to big savings.

2. Book Longer Than You Need and Then Modify

It might sound strange, but weekly rates can be cheaper than daily ones. If you need the car for 5 days, try booking 7 and then contact the company to shorten your rental (if their policy allows). Some companies offer a refund for unused days, and the longer booking may unlock a lower rate to begin with.

3. Look for Discounted Fleet Cars

Some providers offer deals on overstocked models they need to move. These could be less popular cars, or just too many of the same type at one branch. Ask the rental desk if they have a “fleet deal” or check platforms like holidaycars.com for vehicles marked down for quick rental.

4. Return the Car to a Quieter Location

One-way rentals can be expensive but returning the car to a less busy branch (even within the same city) might come with a lower fee. If it’s not far from the airport or your final hotel, consider booking your return at a suburban location or at a less popular office.

5. Book with a Flexible Policy and Then Rebook if Prices Drop

Prices for rental cars can go down especially if demand changes. If you book through a site that allows free cancellation or changes, set a reminder to check again a week before your trip. If the price drops, cancel and rebook. It’s a simple trick that often pays off.

6. Choose the Right Time of Day for Pickup

Rental offices tend to be busiest (and more expensive) during peak flight arrival times. Instead, schedule your pickup during mid-morning or early afternoon when offices are less crowded. Staff may be more willing to offer upgrades or better cars at no extra cost  simply because availability is better.

7. Check for Unadvertised Promos or Partner Discounts

Some deals aren’t shown online. Call or message the provider and ask if there are current promotions or discounts for certain groups (AAA, students, senior travellers, etc.). You’d be surprised how often they can apply a code manually even after you’ve booked online.

A few simple tricks can save you hundreds on your rental. You can use them for your actual vacation instead. Smart travel starts with smart choices. Let your vacation begin  without the extra cost.
