Weekend Recap: Inconsistency costs the Matadors at Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational
The CSUN men’s golf team wrapped up the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational with an 11th-place finish at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
Across three rounds, the Matadors posted scores of 291, 295 and 298 for a team total of 20-over 884. Pacific dominated the field, winning the team title at 47-under 817 and sweeping the top three individual spots. The Tigers Trio of Felix Bouchard (-12), Deitrek Gill (-11) and Ian Fritz (-10) led the tournament in which low scoring was possible, but consistency proved crucial.
“A couple guys weren’t hitting the ball very well, so they were having trouble with ball control,” said head coach Jim Bracken. “They just have to get on the range and get it dialed in. It’s hard to correct things while you’re in a tournament.”
Sophomore Nick Fry led the way for CSUN, finishing tied for 32nd with a 1-over 217. He recorded steady rounds of 73,72 and 72 again, marking his best finish of the fall season.
Juniors Ethan Posthumus and Liam Judkins both finished tied for 48th at 4-over 220. Posthumus stayed even through much of the week, closing with rounds of 74, 72 and 74. Judkins opened strong with a 2-under 70 and an even par 72 before faltering in the final round with a 6-over 78.
Sophomore Tavin Boman finished tied for 86th at 15-over 231 after rounds of 76,79 and 76, while Bryson Barnes recorded a 74 in the first round and a 76 in the final round but was disqualified in round two due to a scorecard error.
Completing individually, Domenic De Luca placed 78th, 10-over 226, shooting rounds of 74,75 and 77.
Bracken recognized the team’s current inconsistency during the tournament as a great learning opportunity to strengthen the team in the future.
“We didn’t play well. We’re just not consistent like we should be right now. We lost a few shots,” Bracken said. “One of my kids signed an incorrect scorecard, so that cost us four shots, but it’s a learning experience.”
Statistically, the par-5’s at The Reserve at Spanos Park provided the best scoring opportunities for the field.
Holes 16, 17 and 18 each played under par average, with the closing par-5 18th yielding 10 eagles and 133 birdies. Conversely, the par-4 17th proved to be the toughest hole of the tournament, averaging nearly half a stroke over par at 4.44.
Pacific’s victory highlighted a field of 17 teams, with Colorado finishing second at 27-under and San Diego rounding out the top three at 22-under. For CSUN, the 11th-place finish placed them ahead of six other programs, including Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and Southern Utah.
The Matadors now turn their focus to their next event in Hawai’i, where they will look to close out the fall season with a stronger showing.
“We have one tournament left in the fall in Hawai‘i, and it’s a really strong field with a lot of top teams from across the country,” said Bracken. “I’m just hoping to have a respectable showing there and then move forward in the spring. I think we’ll get better as we progress through the year.”
