- 11th Annual Banned Books Readout: Let Freedom ReadOct 4, 2023 12:15 PM | Minerva Canto We gather to celebrate freedom of expression by reading aloud from books that have been challenged. Join the University Library, the Department of Journalism, the Queer Studies Program and the Pride Center for the 11th Annual Banned Books Readout! CSUN Associate Professor of Journalism and First Amendment Scholar Elizabeth Blakey will speak about censorship. CSUN students in Professor Blakey's J480 History of American News Media class will give dramatic readings. Pizza will be available at the Northridge Center entrance beginning 12:15 p.m. Our special guest speaker is Minerva Canto. The event is free and everyone is welcome.-------- SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER -----------------------------------------------Minerva Canto is a freelance journalist who writes about social and political issues and is president of Inlandia Institute, a literary arts nonprofit in the Inland Empire. She is a former editorial writer for the /Los Angeles Times/ and has worked as a news columnist for /Capital & Main/ and /The Orange County Register/; a staff writer for /The Associated Press/ in Los Angeles and San Diego; and reporter for newspapers in New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. She has written about immigration, police, courts, the U.S.-Mexico border, education, public health and the arts. She has reported throughout Mexico, including covering a presidential campaign, a year-long project on violence against women in Ciudad Juárez, and stories about cross-border issues. She has received awards for her reporting on victims of violence and reporting in Latin America. Minerva is a native of Mexico City and grew up in Santa Ana, California.*RSVP for this Event Today! Increasing the potential for consultations and referrals, our monthly meetings also feature continuing education credits and/or presentations by a guest speaker specifically tailored for practicing attorneys. Feel free to invite fellow Matador attorneys in your network to join. *Date: October 4**Time: 5:00 p.m.*Zoom link will be forwarded after registration.Our October 4 presentation is entitled, “What Every Attorney Should Know About Judgment Collection” by attorney Kevin Hoang. He will be covering:(1) Basics of Money Judgment Collections and Enforcement;(2) Changes in the Law and(3) Collecting your Unpaid Legal Fees from Former Clients. In the first part of the presentation, Mr. Hoang will be presenting an overview of the levying process, claims of exemption, third party claims and common post-judgment enforcement actions. In the second part, he will be discussing changes in the law concerning confessions of judgment; the renewal of judgments; post-judgment interest and wage garnishment. In the final part, he will be providing a checklist for attorneys to consider when collecting their unpaid legal fees. Mr. Hoang is an experienced commercial judgment collections lawyer who aggressively represents businesses and individuals by providing personalized and effective legal strategies to collect commercial debts and enforce judgments. He has a thorough understanding of the written (and unwritten) rules and procedures set forth in California’s Enforcement of Judgments Law. He has been licensed to practice law in California since 2011. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and J.D. from Syracuse University. He is a member of the Remedies Section’s Executive Committee for the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Syracuse University Law Alumni Association.
