CSUN Honors Graduating Student-Athletes at 2023 Senior Sash Ceremony
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- On Tuesday night (May 8) in the Orchard Conference Center, CSUN honored 55 Matador student-athletes at the Senior Sash Ceremony in preparation for their upcoming commencement. At the annual event, the Matadors celebrated graduates who will walk this spring.
CSUN alum, former men's volleyball student-athlete and current Matador public address announcer Bill Courtland emceed the event, which led off with a speech from Shawn Chin-Farrell, CSUN's Director of Athletics.
"The time in your life as a student-athlete goes quickly," said Chin-Farrell. "When you are a freshman, it is so easy to think there's so much time ahead in college, but then you blink and find yourself in these seats about ready to walk across the graduation stage. As you reflect on your student-athlete years, I want you to think about how you have grown, what is different about you today than when you started, how has this experience prepared you for what is ahead. Hold those feelings with you into the next chapter of your life and let it motivate you. Transfer what you learned here, take it with you to help you succeed in your next chapter."
After being presented senior sashes from their advisor from the Matador Achievement Center, the graduating seniors then received his or her Red Rose. Following the CSUN Tradition of the Rose, roses are laid at the base of the Matador Statue by every Matador commemorating or celebrating a significant achievement.
Graduating student-athletes Jordan Kaeka of the Matador softball team and Michael Arrington from men's soccer also spoke about their experiences at CSUN.
CSUN Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Ced Hackett wrapped up the evening by toasting the group of student-athletes and congratulating the graduates on completing the student portion of being student-athletes.
