Matador Student-Athletes of the Week - Jan. 23
Each week during the 2022-23 season, GoMatadors.com selects two Matadors as Student-Athletes of the Week. This week, we highlight Women's Water Polo's Dorottya Telek and Men's Volleyball's Nathan Merren for their individual performances in the pool and on the court.
Dorottya Telek, Women's Water Polo
Sophomore center Dorottya Telek had a memorable first day of the 2023 season on Saturday. Telek dominated offensively, scoring 11 times over two CSUN wins at the Beach Invite hosted by Long Beach State. The Hungarian native made all five of her attempts in a 17-5 win over La Verne in the morning game before tying a career high with six more goals in a tight 9-8 victory over Biola.
Telek, who scored a Big West-leading 77 goals last year, went 11-for-19 from the field in the two matches to go with three steals and one assist.
Nathan Merren, Men's Volleyball
Redshirt sophomore Nathan Merren had two solid matches last week as CSUN extended its season-long winning streak to four. Merren had a combined 19 kills in wins over The Master's University (Jan. 18) and Menlo College (Jan. 20).
Merren had a season-high 11 kills along with six digs in the Matadors' 3-1 win over the Mustangs on Wednesday before coming back with eight kills on 16 errorless attacks to hit .500 in a 3-0 sweep over the Oaks. Merren also added 11 digs for the week, including five in the win over Menlo. He also recorded four blocks, capping the week with a season-high three blocks (one solo) against Menlo.
