CSUN Top 10 – No. 3 Track & Field Breaks Conference/School Records
From June 27 to August 8, GoMatadors.com will present its top-10 CSUN sports moments from the 2021-22 year. At No. 3, a pair of track and field conference and school records fell during the 2022 season.
Despite breaking the school and Big West record in the 100m hurdles, CSUN's Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck, came up one spot short of advancing to the NCAA National Championships May 28 at the West Preliminary Round at John McDonnell Field.
Ndjip-Nyemeck, a redshirt freshman, ran :13.02 in the first of three quarterfinal heats to break the old school mark of :13.13 which was set by Sydney Mosely in 2019. In addition to breaking the CSUN school record, Ndjip-Nyemeck, broke the Big West record in the event. The old Big West record was :13.06 that was set by Idaho's Angela Whyte in 2003.
Ndjip-Nymeck earned her spot at the regional by running a then-CSUN freshman record :13.36 as she won the Big West title in the event on May 14. She was the fourth consecutive Matador to win the Big West 100m hurdles title.
Chris Pitts qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the 400m when he ran :46.42 to break the school record in the event at the Mar. 19 Willie Williams Classic. His time surpassed the old mark of :46.80 that Clinton Lane set in 1999.
Pitts finished second in the 400m at the 2022 Big West Championship. He was a member of the Matadors' 4x400m that finished third at the Big West Championship and was a part of the 4x40m relay that ran the fifth fastest time (3:10.75) to place second at the Willie Williams Classic.
