NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Athletics has posted a significant improvement in earning a multiyear 2023 NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 981 thanks to nine of its sports programs earning a perfect score of 1,000.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Athletics has posted a significant improvement in earning a multiyear 2022-23 NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 981 thanks to nine of its sports programs earning a perfect score of 1,000.

As a department, CSUN made a vast improvement, posting a 13-point increase which continues the Matadors' upward overall trajectory. After posting a department-wide 968 in 2021-22, CSUN has increased its total to 981 in the most recent APR report.

"We are immensely proud to announce that our academic progress rate has soared to 981, marking a significant improvement," said Sonia Hahn, CSUN's Senior Associate Athletics Director/Chief Operating Officer/SWA. "This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the relentless dedication and unwavering commitment of our Matador Achievement Center staff and the commendable efforts of our student-athletes."

Among the Matador teams improving their previous scores, men's basketball posted a perfect score of 1,000, which hasn't been achieved by the program since the 2010-11 academic year.

"We are really excited about being able to report the first perfect APR score for men's basketball since 2010-11," said head coach Andy Newman. "It is a testament to the hard work these student-athletes are giving in the classroom and the efforts of our support staff in the MAC here at CSUN. We look forward to supporting these student-athletes as they continue to progress towards earning their CSUN degrees."

"It is exciting to see men's basketball's single year score reach the perfect mark," said Lindsey Schantz, Director of the Matador Achievement Center. "Lots of teamwork goes into achieving this – credit to the student-athletes, coaches, and Matador Achievement Center staff for their diligent work. This sure puts us on the right trajectory of where the program is headed."

In addition to men's basketball, eight other CSUN teams achieved a perfect 1,000 APR score including men's cross country, men's golf, women's cross country, softball. women's soccer, women's tennis, women's indoor volleyball, and women's water polo. It was the eighth consecutive ranking that women's cross country has hit the 1,000 mark, while men's golf did so for the fourth straight time. Women's volleyball has achieved a perfect single-year score since 2016-17.

CSUN's 11 squads that equaled or exceeded their single year APR score from 2022 were: baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's cross country, softball, women's soccer, tennis, women's volleyball, and women's water polo.

A team's APR accounts for eligibility, retention, and graduation to generate a measure of academic performance. Each year, the APR creates a snapshot of a team's academic success as it tracks the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The 2023 APR is a multiyear rate based on scores from the 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. The NCAA began tracking APR in 2004-05.
